The Lord Jesus knew how frail our memories are. Actually, frail may not be the right word. Sometimes we set our own memory priorities instead of letting God do it! We tend to forget what it was really all about. We’re to do this in remembrance of Him, least we forget! The Lord’s Supper is symbolic of His Death, & Burial for our sins. Doing this in the Spirit will “keep” us in remembrance of the great sacrifice! Luke 22:15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 22:16 For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 22:17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 22:18 For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. Jesus did say: “If you love me, you’ll keep my commandments” in John 14:15
However, if we partake of it unworthily (with unconfessed sin in our lives), it can be hazardous to the Saved! 1st Corinthians 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 11:30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
So examine yourself before you participate in the Lord’s supper. If there’s any unconfessed sin in your life, confess it to God. 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
There are some who say that if we neglect partaking of the Lords Supper we can’t keep our Salvation. I don’t believe the scriptures teach this. Sure, it’s important to obey the Lord in our lives and this certainly is a commandment, but the very act doesn’t keep you saved. There is nothing we can do to keep ourselves Saved! That’s already taken care of by our Lord and He will not let anyone or anything take us from Him. We’re His if we’re saved!
