Temptation Of Our Lord

By | March 13, 2016

Parson, I am having some difficulty with the scriptures about the temptation of our Lord. I know all the scriptures, but cannot reconcile in my mind whether since there was no plan b:Jesus could have yielded to the temptation. In my heart I have always believed that He could have chosen to yield, since he was human as well as divine. Otherwise, I cannot see how it was temptation at all. Of late I have talked with some folks who declare that it was impossible for Him to yield. If this is true then why is it that the scripture states, He was tempted in all ways as we are yet without sin. Now I know that God tempts no man and that the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness for the purpose of the temptation, God tests and satan tempts, right??? Anytime that you have a few minutes to enlighten me, I would appreciate your help.

I can understand where you might be confused and maybe a little concerned here sis! Would it confuse you further to tell you that not only was Jesus 100% man, but was also 100% God? I’m really going to have to explain this one! Look at what the writer of Hebrews says about the Saviors temptation, Hebrews 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

First understand that being tempted is not sinning, giving into the temptation is. So, because Jesus had to come as a man, he took on this flesh which is able to be tempted! If it were impossible for the Savior to be tempted, He wouldn’t have been a perfect sacrifice and He most defiantly wouldn’t have been an example for us! This is where he had to be 100% man! Hebrews 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; To understand that He was also 100% God and the only one able to present such a sacrifice, we have to go to the book of John! John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

How this is possible is beyond me! I couldn’t figure it out if I had to, but God knew exactly what He was doing and that is just fine and dandy with me! In other words sis, take it in faith that this miracle had to be done and accept it. That is the evidence of our Salvation, isn’t it? Faith I mean! Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
