Q. Dear Brother Tim, I pray that you can help me understand some scripture
that my Pastor has recently discussed :
-
I do not understand Matthew 5:3 - why is it blessed to be "poor in spirit"
? I would think we would want to be rich in the spirit - and to keep receiving
the richness of the being in the spirit. I am really off-base??
-
How do I know for sure that I have a "saving faith" and not just an "illusion
of faith"? I do not want to come to the end of my life and find out I have
lived my life in an illusion of faith ...
-
Why do Godly people have bad things happen to them?
-
How to I put my marriage in perspective with my walk with the Lord? I know
God must come first in my life - but marriage is important also ... sometimes
there is a conflict ... I want my husband to be a part of the beauty of walking
with God - I think he would be so much happier...
Thank you for listening again. [Anon]
A. Hi ma'am, To be poor in spirit is to realize that you have nothing, are
nothing, and can do nothing, and have need of all things. Poverty of the
spirit is experienced in a person when he/she is brought to their knees before
God to admit his/her total helplessness. It is the first noticeable evidence
of a Gods work of grace within your soul. For instance look where the prodigal
son had to get to before he returned to his fathers house.
Luke 15:17: And when he came to himself, he said, How
many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I
perish with hunger! 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say
unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, 15:19 And
am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired
servants.
Saving faith comes at the time of Salvation sis. It is at the time when we
become poor in spirit. It is not needed anymore after the time of Salvation
but is replaced with the blessed hope mentioned in Titus
2:10 Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the
doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. 2:11 For the grace of God that
bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 2:12 Teaching us that, denying
ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly,
in this present world; 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious
appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 2:14 Who gave himself
for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself
a peculiar people, zealous of good works. In other words you now have
the blessed hope through faith that you are now heaven bound.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped
for, the evidence of things not seen. Sometimes though our faith waivers
and we can't see our salvation as clearly as we used to. Does this make sense
to you sis? I once knew a lady that had a constant battle with the fact of
her salvation until she learned to take the Lord Jesus at His word when he
said; John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall
come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 6:38 For
I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that
sent me. 6:39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all
which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again
at the last day. What are these verses saying to you sis? What is
the Savior trying to tell you/us?
Why do Godly people have bad things happen to them? Simply put sis, because
we still have the flesh even though the soul is saved and the Lord Jesus
says; Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies,
bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them
which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 5:45 That ye may be the children
of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil
and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Bad
things happen to the saved person the same as they happen to the lost person.
True, there is a certain protection on the saved because of their soul being
sealed, but facts are that the flesh is still weak.
God, then husband, everything else sis is the order or priority. Putting
God first then will sooner or later give you the results that God has ordained
one way or the other according to His will. The only way you can get Your
husband to share that with you sis is to follow what is laid out in the Holy
Scriptures. 1st Peter 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, be in
subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also
may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 3:2 While they
behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3:3 Whose adorning let
it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold,
or of putting on of apparel; 3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart,
in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit,
which is in the sight of God of great price. 3:5 For after this manner in
the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves,
being in subjection unto their own husbands: 3:6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham,
calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are
not afraid with any amazement.
Remember also sis that you only can answer for your own Salvation and not
husbands. Do that which is RIGHT in the site of God weather he wants you
to or not. Let God sort out the details. Phillipians
2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence
only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear
and trembling. 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to
do of his good pleasure. 2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke,
in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights
in the world; 2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in
the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in
vain.
Your servant sis, [The Parson]
Q. Who/what will make up the Bride of Christ? [David]
A. Basically because the Savior spoke of us (born again Christians) as the
bride would tell me that we are the bride of Christ! Luke
5:33 And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and
make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat
and drink? 5:34 And he said unto them, Can ye
make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with
them? 5:35 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away
from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
[Timothy]
Q. First I would like to say that this is a very good site. Second, the question
I have concerns fasting. I understand that prayer and fasting go hand in
hand when you are wanting some serious time with GOD. I plan to fast for
seven days. What is acceptable to GOD for me to consume during this fast?
I was thinking maybe juice, toast maybe a little fruit. Or is no food allowed
at all? I will be alone during this time. Just me, my Bible and GOD in a
motel room. All day, every day. For seven days. So I really can't cook anything
or go anywhere to get anything. I just want to know can I eat food at all
and if so what? Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any help you
can offer would be a great help. Thanks again. Your Brother in Christ, [Robert
Bertram]
A. Robert, you asked me on ICQ to very prayerfully answer this question and
I have. Fasting is not a commandment to the Christian and for some is not
a enhancer of prayer. This is between you and the Lord! Fasting is the
abstainance of all foods but not drink. You need that moisture and nutrients
found in juices and the flushing effect of water. But if you are wanting
some guide lines, here they are:
-
When you fast, make sure it is in secret and that no one knows its happening.
This is between God and yourself! Matthew 6:16 Moreover
when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure
their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you,
They have their reward. 6:17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head,
and wash thy face; 6:18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy
Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward
thee openly.
-
Concentrate solely on your prayers to God, abstain from all outside interference,
make it plain in your heart first that your daily food is less important
to you then Gods will! Isaiah 58:3 Wherefore have we
fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul,
and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure,
and exact all your labours. 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and
to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day,
to make your voice to be heard on high. 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have
chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as
a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this
a fast, and an acceptable day to the Lord? 58:6 Is not this the fast that
I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens,
and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? 58:7 Is it
not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are
cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and
that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? 58:8 Then shall thy light
break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily:
and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be
thy rereward.
-
Immediately start eating again before you start hurting you health.
Acts 27:33 And while the day was coming on, Paul besought
them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have
tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. 27:34 Wherefore I pray
you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an
hair fall from the head of any of you. 27:35 And when he had thus spoken,
he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he
had broken it, he began to eat. 27:36 Then were they all of good cheer, and
they also took some meat. Do not take the fast to the point of injury
to the Temple, your body! 1st Corinthians 3:16 Know
ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth
in you? 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy;
for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
[Timothy]
Q. Dear Pastor, I am a member of an Independent, Fundamental, KJV loving
Baptist Church. But the problem is we don't have any pastor here in our church
for the past 18 months now. We have only one deacon and he's handling all
the ministry with the help and support of all the men in the church. We are
averaging 40- 50 members every Sunday and 10 - 15 children in our children's
department. Do you think it is wise to have a second deacon and appoint him
to help our deacon. The Bible is not clear about how many deacons we can
have specially now that we have no pastor here in our church. Thank you very
much and may our good Lord bless your ministry. [Br. James Estenilo]
A. Brother James, the idea of having another deacon is a good one and I see
no harm in it. If the man that is chosen is a true man of God, he can only
be of help. You must first seek the Lords guidance and then proceed. The
first deacons were seven (7) in number. (Acts 6:3) but we are not told there
has to be a certain amount but God's perfect number for completion is seven.
Acts 6:1: And in those days, when the number of the
disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against
the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
6:2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and
said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
6:3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report,
full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry
of the word. 6:5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose
Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus,
and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6:6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid
their hands on them. 6:7 And the word of God increased; and the number of
the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the
priests were obedient to the faith.
1st Timothy 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave,
not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 3:9
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 3:10 And let these
also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found
blameless. 3:11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober,
faithful in all things.
1st Timothy 3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of
one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 3:13 For they
that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good
degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 3:14 These
things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: 3:15 But if I
tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in
the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground
of the truth. 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:
God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached
unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
Remember though, a deacon cannot be a constant substitute for a preacher
(pastor). You must continually pray to God the Father to send a pastor to
you! Have faith that God will hear your prayers and send you the one that
you need. Romans 10:14: How then shall they call on
him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of
whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 10:15
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful
are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings
of good things! 10:16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias
saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 10:17 So then faith cometh by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Could it be that among your congregation there is someone with both the calling
of Preacher & Pastor? You will know that he is the right man of God by
his fruits if he bears his calling well. Matthew 7:16
Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs
of thistles? 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but
a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth
evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 7:19 Every
tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
I will place a prayer request on the Prayer Corner and will be praying for
your church myself. May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be upon you and
your congregation.

Q. I need some info on how a parson is connected with the church and the
roll he does in the church? [Anon]
A. I selected the title of Parson because I don't completely agree with being
called reverend. The Thorndike-Barnhart comprehensive dictionary defines
Parson as:
1. Minister in charge of a Parish. 2. Any Clergyman; Minister.
This was taken from the old english for the above stated definition.
The term Reverend is found in the Bible only once in the old testament and
it refers directly to God and none other. A preacher shouldn't be reverenced
but respected as a man of God. The reverence belongs to God Almighty!
Psalms 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he
hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy
and reverend is his
name.
Timothy
Q. What is the role of women in the Church today! [Anon]
A. The same as it has been for at least the last 2,000 years. The role of
a woman in the church is that of a Christian worker the same as a man. Its
true that roles are spelled out in the scriptures pertaining to gender, but
if your asking what specifically what their role is lets go to the scriptures
and find out.
Galations 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by
faith in Christ Jesus. 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into
Christ have put on Christ. 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is
neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one
in Christ Jesus. 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed,
and heirs according to the promise. In other words, we all have the
same calling! To Spread the Gospel!
Now as you will read in the question listed below this one, I have stated
that "As for a woman being a preacher. I am of the
strong belief that this is not possible. Not that a woman is not smart enough
to handle the job. Nor that I don't believe that all Christians have a calling.
They do! I ask you to read the books of Timothy and Titus. There you will
find many sweet truths to Christian living." Its just that God has
made man and woman different in alot of ways that makes us better suited
for different jobs.
Timothy
Q. Sir: A few questions and background. My daughter is getting married this
year and they plan to have a woman minister marry them. Her father is upset
at this and at the fact they are not being married in a church, but at the
bridegroom's parents home (a garden wedding). How do you feel about women
in the ministry and what biblical history do you have to back this up.. I
must state that her stepfather and I strongly support our daughter in this
and feel that this is her wedding and she should have a minister she/they
feel comfortable with and can relate to.
Thanks for your help. V. Johnson
A. Your Husband has some reason to be upset, but as you said, it is your
daughters wedding! If he is to hold to Christian principals then he must
remember that your daughter is about to make a decision about how to start
her life on her own and if he doesn't handle his objections in a Godly way,
he may push her away. That is not to say that he should condone your daughters
decision but that he should deal with her as a loving father who is concerned
with the decisions which will effect her life.
As for a woman being a preacher. I am of the strong belief that this is not
possible. Not that a woman is not smart enough to handle the job. Nor that
I don't believe that all Christians have a calling. They do! I ask you to
read the books of Timothy and Titus. There you will find many sweet truths
to Christian living.
First, lets go to what the scriptures say as far as a woman being a minister!
1 Timothy 2:10 But (which becometh women professing
godliness) with good works. 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all
subjection. 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority
over the man, but to be in silence. 2:13 For Adam was first formed, then
Eve. 2:14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in
the transgression. 2:15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing,
if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety. Some
people would argue that this was written almost 2000 years ago and that this
idea is outdated. I don't think so. God isn't in the habit of changing his
mind about what he would expect us to do or how we are to behave. 1 Peter
1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of
grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 1:25 But
the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the
gospel is preached unto you. Some women would also discount this and say
they don't care what the Paul said! They are going to be a preacher anyway.
Well let me leave you with this passage from Proverbs
13:13 Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the
commandment shall be rewarded.
I hope this is of some help to you. With your permission, I would like
to publish this answer on the Parsons Corner. Just Email me back and
let me know.
P.S. Where ever they would want to take their vows is fine as long as it
doesn't make a mockery of a sacred ceremony!
[Timothy]
Q. Why do you give your answers from the King James version Bible only? [Anon]
A. There's a good question if I ever heard one! Of all the translations I
have read, The King James version Bible is right on the money as to what
the original transcripts originally said. This can be confirmed by many great
bible scholars and theologians. Some of the others and I will name them in
more detail if you wish, either insert mans traditions or discard the blood.
The bible specifically tells us that without the shedding
of blood, there is no remission of sin. "Hebrews 9:22"
There is a great debate going on right now about which version is better,
but no matter what the debate, God's word will always stand true! By the
way, a dear friend has helped me in seeing that this question needs clarifying
on this page and that is exactly what I plan to do.
[Timothy]
Q. Where in the New Testament will I find the Scripture that quotes almost
