Those Teachings In Question

With the advent of certain Charasmatic movements in this world, and there are plenty, certain new teachings have sprung up that I would like to examine here in this paper. I'm sure some or even many of you readers have heard of some or even all of these teachings that are being addressed here. And these really wouldn't be an issue except that they may very well be dangerous to the faith in some way or another. Some may not. This paper is for us to examine them and to spiritually discern according to the scriptures if they are correct and have no harm to them or if they are error and are dangerous.

The Atonement, was it on the Cross or in Hell: 1st Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Benny Henn ~ TBN, 12-15-1990

  • "Ladies and gentlemen, the serpent is a symbol of Satan. Jesus Christ knew the only way he would stop Satan was by becoming one in nature with him. You say, What did you say? What blasphemy is this? No, you hear this! He did not take my sin; He became my sin."

Joyce Meyer ~ 1991, Paperback Book, The Most important Decision You will Ever Make: A Complete and Thorough Understanding of What it Means to be Born Again

  • "There is no hope of anyone going to heaven unless they believe this truth I am presenting. You cannot go to heaven unless you believe with all your heart that Jesus took your place in hell"
  • "During that time He entered hell, where you and I deserved to go, legally, because of our sin. He paid the price there...no plan was too extreme...Jesus paid on the cross and in hell"

Kenneth Copeland ~ Jesus, Our Lord of Glory, from the Believer's Voice of Victory Magazine, April 1982, page 3

  • "When Jesus cried, 'It is finished!' He was not speaking of the plan of redemption. There were still three days and nights to go through before He went to the throne...Jesus' death on the cross was only the beginning of the complete work of redemption."

Kenneth Copeland ~  What Happened From the Cross to the Throne? 1984 audiotape released by Kenneth Copeland Ministries

  • "The righteousness of God was made to be sin. He accepted the sin nature of Satan in His own spirit. And at that moment that He did so He cried, `My God, My God, Why hast thou forsaken me?' You don't know what happened at the cross. Why do you think Moses, upon instruction of God, raised the serpent upon that pole instead of a lamb? That use to bug me. I said, `Why in the world would you want to put a snake up there - the sign of Satan? Why didn't you put a lamb on that pole?' And the Lord said, `Because it was a sign of Satan that was hanging on the cross.' He said, `I accepted in my own spirit, spiritual death; and the light was turned off'"
    • The source of Copelands subject seem to actually taken from a book entitled "What Happened From The Cross To The Throne" by E W Kenyon

Kenneth Copeland ~ Holy Bible: Kenneth Copeland Reference Edition, 1991, page129

  • "Satan conquered Jesus on the Cross and took His spirit to the dark regions of hell."

Kenneth Copeland ~ The Price of It All , an audiotape released by Kenneth Copeland Ministries

  • "He [speaking of the Savior] allowed the devil to drag Him into the depths of hell. He allowed Himself to come under Satan's control. Every demon in hell came down on Him to annihilate Him. They tortured Him beyond anything anybody had ever conceived. For three days He suffered everything there is to suffer."

Kenneth Hagin, Sr. ~ How Jesus obtained His Name, audiotape 44H01

  • "Christ's physical death on the cross was not enough to save us."?

Okey dokey fine. I see what is being said on this one subject and I cannot agree even remotely with these statements. Why? Well lets look at simple, uncomplicated, and unobscured teaching.

Concerning the statement made that Jesus became sin and not that he took on our sin, lets look at the uncomplicated word of God. Look at Hebrews 7:1: For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; We see this chapter is talking about the Lord and Savior. My Savior, Jesus Christ.

  1. Hebrews 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. 7:26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. 7:28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
    • I love how Paul worded things. Simple even though a complex thought and complete yet all aspects had to be covered. Jesus, who is of the order of Melchisedec and most certainly God Himself has an unchanging preisthood. He has been, is, and always will be HOLY, UNDEFILED, & SEPERATE from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. Never turning into something He is not but able to bear the penalty for our sin. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. 13:9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.

Mrs. Joyce Meyer said "There is no hope of anyone going to heaven unless they believe this truth I am presenting." Yet the Savior says:

  • John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what the Lord is talking about here. As moses lifted up the serpent, so must the Savior be lifted up. Do you know the story?
    • Numbers 21:6 And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. 21:7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord, and against thee; pray unto the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 21:8 And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

Positive Confession

Introduced by Kenneth Hagin, Sr.and more actually derived from the teachings of a man named E.W. Kenyon, this teaching claimed that you should "take on the authority the Lord gave you as a child of God and rebuke the curse". Hagin is quoted from a 1990's article from the publication The Word Of Faith as follows: "Often you create your own negative situations yourself with wrong thinking, wrong believing, and wrong speaking. So start believing according to God's Word. Then begin making positive confessions of faith and victory over your life. You will never receive anything from God beyond the words you speak. If you don't like what you have in life, then begin to change the way you are thinking, believing, and speaking. Instead of speaking according to natural circumstances out of your head, learn to speak God's Word from your spirit. Begin to confess God's promises of life and health and victory into your situation. Then you can begin to enjoy God's abundant life as you have what you say!"
