Forgive Yourself

By | February 29, 2016

I recently have been having panic attacks because I am afraid that I am not going to heaven when I die. I have also been having doubts about God and religion and I don’t know what to do. I do not currently attend church but my sister says that these attacks are God calling me to the church. I just feel like I am not worthy to enter a church because of things I have done in the past and because of my lack of faith now. Any help or words of wisdom you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Melissa

Melissa, sometimes its easier to get forgiveness than to forgive ourselves. Strangest thing I’ve ever seen about mankind. It all stems from our expecting ourselves to act a certain way and not having enough faith in our own personality to make it happen. That’s where trust in the Lord comes in. If we take Him at His word by asking Him for forgiveness and then continue to blame ourselves, we aren’t fully trusting him and quite frankly not fully believing Him. The Bible says: Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Here is the formula:

  • Make sure that we are a Child of God: 1st John 5:10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 5:11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 5:12 He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
  • Refuse to walk in the lusts and desires of the flesh. That’s a choice. Colossians 3:5: Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 3:6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 3:7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 3:10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
  • Trust the Lord in that He is faithful to forgive you. 1st John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I can relate, Melissa. I quit going to church YEARS ago because of the hypocrisy within them. However, I recently started going to a church where they repeatedly encourage one to ask questions. The churches I’d attended in the past simply gave/said what they wanted and expected you to accept it. Period. I didn’t go for that much either. I’m at a point in my life now, that I know I am not worthy of His forgiveness, but that’s the funny thing about God… That’s exactly what He accepts. I can not give you quotes, I can only give you the encouragement to know that it is perfectly ok to feel less than worthy. That’s how you know you ARE ready to move on spiritually, though. It’s humility. Know that HE wants you to accept HIM no matter who you are or what you may have done. Learn more! Achieve more for yourself by allowing yourself to study His Word. That will point you in the direction you need to go.
